We recommend excursions to historic cities worth seeing, such as Speyer (cathedral and museums), Bad Dürkheim, Landau, Kaiserslautern and Heidelberg (castle).
It is also wonderful to make a detour to nearby Alsace, for example Strasbourg and all the lovely little villages on the way there.
